This week on Riff Worship, we’re taking a look at the long-standing musical tradition of the “cover song.” Whether it’s a popular hit or a niche favorite, covers often act as a direct pulse to the listener—offering a glimpse into an artist’s personal influences and taste.
Throughout the history of hardcore punk, cover songs have served as a bridge between eras by introducing new generations to the tracks that built the genre as it continues to evolve and reach new heights.
These values are perfectly expressed on Flexi Your Head, a limited postcard flexi from the seminal California hardcore band Punch. Recorded live to tape in 2011 by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Gouge Away, Oathbreaker), this release features a chaotic, high-energy medley of hardcore essentials.
We are thrilled to be rejoined by former Punch vocalist Meghan O’Neil (The Armed, King Woman, Super Unison) to explore the origins of Flexi Your Head, share our favorite cover songs, and discuss the importance of this timeless tradition!

Following the release of the now-iconic Jane Doe, Converge could have easily delivered a direct sequel to satisfy fans craving the same sonic intensity. Building on the momentum of their genre-defining Trustkill Records debut, This Is Love, This Is Murderous, Orange County’s Bleeding Through returned in 2006 with their most ambitious work to date.
By seamlessly weaving together elements of death metal, hardcore, and black metal, the band pushed their signature metalcore sound into emotionally daring new territory. From scathing tracks like “For Love And Failing” and “Kill To Believe,” to more melodic moments on “Love in Slow Motion,” and even the unexpected instrumental title track—Bleeding Through cemented their legendary status in aggressive music.
