  Vancouver is a major coastal seaport city situated on the mainland of southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It occupies a peninsula bordered by the Burrard Inlet to the north, the Fraser River delta to the south, the Strait of Georgia to the west, and the Coast Mountains to the east and north. This strategic location makes it Canada's primary gateway to the Pacific Rim and Asia.The city's most defining geographical feature is its stunning juxtaposition of dense urban development against a dramatic natural backdrop. The steep, forested slopes of the North Shore Mountains (including iconic peaks like Grouse and Cypress) rise abruptly just north of the city center, while the waters of the Burrard Inlet, English Bay, and the Strait of Georgia frame its western and northern edges, creating a visually spectacular setting.Vancouver experiences a mild, oceanic climate heavily influenced by its coastal location and proximity to the Pacific Ocean (Köppen classification: Cfb). It features relatively warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. While known for its significant rainfall (especially from October to March), it enjoys mild temperatures year-round, with rare snowfall at sea level and infrequent extremes of heat or cold compared to continental Canada. The Vancouver region lies within the Coast Mountains physiographic region, shaped by complex tectonic activity and glaciation. The city itself is built upon a mix of glacial deposits (including the Fraser River delta sediments) and ancient volcanic bedrock.
