- Gen Z’s in the UK are facing the toughest start to adult life than any generation in half a century, with key financial milestones like leaving home, buying a property and starting a family becoming even harder to achieve. In addition, millions of graduates are grappling with repaying student loans in a tough jobs market. Ahead of the government’s October Budget, how can the finances of Gen Z be fixed?
In a podcast recorded live at the FT Weekend Festival, the FT’s consumer editor Claer Barret is joined by Oliver Gardner, founder of the student loans campaign group Rethink Repayment and Abigail Foster, the former accountant turned financial educator and author, debating whether the new prime minister can “bring back hope” for younger generations.
Plus, there’s career advice from Tolani Talks Money, the investment industry professional who went public about her six-figure salary and bonus on social media, investment tips from professional trader Michael Taylor, better known online as Shifting Shares, and property and savings strategies from Brian Byrnes, director of personal finance at MoneyBox.

But how will these new taxes be applied and what could they cost you? In a podcast recorded live at the FT, host and consumer editor Claer Barrett is joined by Dan Neidle, the founder of Tax Policy Associates; Stuart Kirk, the FT’s investment columnist; and Tej Parikh, the FT’s economics leader writer, to field questions from readers and listeners. They cover everything from what the Budget means for people investing in UK markets, the new rules on pensions and salary sacrifice, how to stay under the £100,000 threshold for childcare support and much more.

When even the ‘Sage of Omaha’ is reducing his exposure to certain US stocks, Margo wonders if it’s time for her to follow his lead and look to invest in other parts of the world.
Presenter Claer Barrett, the FT’s consumer editor, is joined by not one but two FT columnists: Simon Edelsten, Partner at Goshawk Asset Management, and finance veteran and Skin in the Game columnist Stuart Kirk. Together, they chew over Buffett’s succession plans, the lure of Japanese stocks and why even Margo’s seven-figure portfolio could be particularly vulnerable to a market correction.

Now, at 29, and with a wedding on the cards, he’s got an extra reason to be diligent about his money. Some of Matt’s stock picks (such as Glencore) haven’t been performing as he might like. Is it time to leave stock-picking behind, and focus on a more diversified approach?
Presenter Claer Barrett is joined by Adam Walkom, the co-founder of Permanent Wealth Partners, and Investors’ Chronicle editor Taha Lokhandwala, to discuss Matt’s situation. Adam and Taha disagree on the merits of stock-picking – but they’re in agreement about the concentration risk lurking within Matt’s portfolio.
