- i've decided i'm starting an advice column on substack, because i want to create more community in a really positive way. i'm hoping to build a little corner of substack where the girls are actually supporting each other and lifting each other up when things are hard, instead of just scrolling past it.
before i launch it there, i wanted to test it out here first with some real questions from you guys.
so in this episode i'm answering things like what you actually do when a guy you've been talking to long distance, someone you have genuinely never met in person, tells you he wants to fly into your town. exciting, or a red flag with a nice haircut.
i also get into the one i get asked constantly, which is whether davide and i actually sit down and have dinner together every single night, and what that really looks like versus what people assume from the outside.
and then the one that actually made me sit with it for a minute, which is how do you stay open to the world, genuinely open, soft, still willing to hope, when it so often feels like a tragic place. i don't have a neat answer for that one, but i gave a real one.
consider this the pilot episode of the column. if it goes well, you're all getting a lot more of my unsolicited opinions very soon.

2026-09-02 | 1 h 25 min. Before Flamingo Estate became one of the most beloved lifestyle brands in the world, Richard Christiansen was running a fast, urban, client driven creative agency. Today he's a rural Australian farm kid turned custodian of a hundred plus farms and makers, and the author of Pleasure Principles, a book that draws its wisdom from gardens rather than boardrooms.
In this conversation, Richard and I talk about what it actually means to slow down while running a business that keeps growing. We get into the daily rituals that have nothing to do with work, the difference between expensive and truly luxurious, and the plant lessons from his book that took the longest to sink in. We also talk about hospitality in its truest sense, the people who shaped his taste, and what he'd tell someone to do if they only had twenty minutes to experience one pleasure from his world.
This is a conversation about beauty, patience, and building something rooted enough to last.

I’m answering your questions and giving a little life update as I head to Mexico with Carmela for her stem cell treatment, what I’m hoping for, and why I’m choosing to approach the trip with gratitude instead of fear.
I’m also getting into my advice for starting a brand in your 20s (hint: get some life experience first), why the best brands are built around a real point of view, and everything I learned from my years at Reformation. Then we talk weddings—why yours should feel personal instead of like a content shoot, the details that made mine so special, and why your guests’ experience matters more than getting the perfect photo.
Plus, friendship breakups, anxiety, social media, sadness, gratitude, and the question I ask myself when I start spiraling: Is this real? Life is going to have hard moments, but I’m learning to stop future tripping, focus on what’s actually in front of me, and let myself enjoy the life I’ve worked so hard to build.

We’re recapping our summer in Sicily- from Taormina / Davide's hometown to beach clubs, long lunches, late-night gelato, traveling with two kids and the places we’ll always return to. We reminisce about the restaurant where Davide asked my dad for permission to propose, his past life as a Sicilian beach boy, Italian friendship and family culture, and why traveling with our kids has become so meaningful to us.
We also get into parenting anxiety, making room for intimacy after kids, ignoring judgment, and why I refuse to let fear of something being uncomfortable stop us from making memories as a family. Plus, Davide reflects on turning 38, the personal growth that’s gotten him here, and what it means to finally feel like it’s time to “be your own hero.”
