In our summer series continuing with The Swans, we take a little journey this week into an adjacent story. Our focus this week is the beloved daughter of C.Z. Guest, Cornelia Guest. Cornelia was a whole entire scene in the 1980s, being the first celebutante. Bob Colacello writes all about Cornelia in 1988 in a delicious piece titled “A Deb Goes West” for Vanity Fair. In this episode of our summer of Swans, we spend a little time with Truman’s Publishing Swan, Katharine Graham, America’s first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company and the honoree of The Black and White Ball. Katharine is a friend to Truman, but plays a far larger role in Dominick Dunne’s third act as well. David Begelman, the movie studio head and Hollywood hotshot, participates in a bit of criminal embezzlement providing Dominick Dunne a BIG clue on the way to investigative journalism career. Also included, a now-found missing chapter from Capote’s Answered Prayers. These few pages of “Yachts and Things” recall all about that time that Katharine and Truman sailed around the islands, made friends with a dolphin, and did some hashish too.
