Yes, yes, Brent Flyberg, the author of this and all other episode descriptions, is back for a third episode this season as an emergency fill-in for a guest who lost power due to the advancing consequences of climate change denial, so it’s sort of a good news, bad news situation that we’re making the best of. 

This episode has BARS. From Pete’s “That’s what I do,” to Peggy’s mom’s “Get a cat,” to Don’s “Lots of people who haven’t taken LSD know that, Roger,” this episode is stacked with great lines. You’ll need more context to understand what makes those bon mots memorable, but you’re watching the show, right? We’re not here to spoon feed you. What are you? Orange Sherbet & LSD

Get in the car. We’re going to a Howard Johnson’s to eat orange sherbet. On the way, you can listen to this week’s episode with comedian and author of First Time, Long Time, Amy Silverberg, talking to Matt & Vince about Mad Men season five episode six, “Far Away Places.”

The episode is broken into three vignettes focused on Don, Roger, and Peggy. Each goes to a far away place and finds self-discovery. Probably could have stayed home to do that, but then it wouldn’t be art.

Don goes to a Hojo’s upstate with Megan and tries to force feed her orange sherbet. Not in like a kinky, feeder fetish way, so keep it in your pants, sickos. No, it’s more of a classic controlling husband sort of way, and when she’s not receptive to it, he drives off without her. His self-discovery: he’s been too horny to work hard.

Peggy goes to Mars, sort of. Ginsberg tells her he was born there, and definitely not in a concentration camp. Her self-discovery: She has been working too hard to be horny. 

Roger’s far away place is the depths of his own mind, man. He drops acid with Jane and a bunch of her intellectual friends. His self-discovery: he’s no longer horny for being married to Jane.

Chewing Gum on His Pubis 

As soon as we start this podcast, we warn you, it will be too late to run. Writer, podcaster, and Defector.com editor and co-founder, David J. Roth returns to chat with Matt & Vince about Mad Men season five episode five, “Signal 30.”

Pete’s a lot like Rodney Dangerfield in this episode. He gets no respect and he’s going back to school. He’s taking driver’s ed with a bunch of teens, and one of them has feet that catch his eye, but he gets mogged by a high school quarterback-looking-ass teen, because as much as he wants to be like Don, he has the social skills of coxswain-looking-ass teen.

For a brief moment, Pete has a shred of Don’s respect after Trudy finally tricks the Drapers into visiting the Campbell’s suburban home, giving Don a glimpse of Pete's seemingly happy wife and happy life, but he pisses it away when he indulges in some sex work to impress Lane’s friend at Jaguar. After Mr. Jaguar’s wife finds chewing gum on his pubis, SCDP loses the account, resulting in a conference room donnybrook between Pete “grimy little pimp” and Lane “Mr. Toad” Price. Pete loses and he gets no respect at all I tell ya.

Murder? I Hardly Know Her

If you need something to listen to while you hide under your bed, put on this week’s episode with comedian Allen Strickland Williams, whose album, Ran Through, is available now, joining Matt & Vince to talk about Mad Men season five episode four, “Mystery Date.”

The offices of SCDP are abuzz after Joyce brings some grizzly photos of the Speck Murders for everyone to gawk at. The images clearly get into Don’s head, because he goes home and has a dream about murdering a former fling he encountered earlier in the day. He doesn’t really want to kill her, of course. He wants to have sex with her, but he knows he shouldn’t, and choking her to death is the best solution his subconscious can come up with. 

Sally is freaked out by the news of the nursing students getting murked, but luckily, her stepgrandmother is there to posit that maybe those young women deserved to get murdered because they were sluts. I think technically this scene passes the Bechdel Test.

Rolling Stones and Betty’s Big Bones

Eat first. That’s our advice. Then put on this week’s episode of the pod with Comedian and cohost of the What a Time to be Alive and Lie Cheat and Steal podcasts, Kath Barbadoro, talking to Matt and Vince about Mad Men season five episode three, “Tea Leaves.”

Poor Betty is really going through it in this episode. Her second worst nightmare, cancer, might be coming true, but her absolute worst nightmare, getting kind of fat, is all too real. Keep her in your prayers. 

SCDP needs a new guy who sleeps all day, is disrespectful of authority, drunk half the time, and smells like pee to help write copy for Mohawk, so Peggy hires Michael Ginsberg, because every ad agency has one jew now. 

Don and Harry meet some teens backstage at a Rolling Stones concert, and Harry is such a lecherous little pig he makes Don look like a boy scout. Rock and roll brings out the worst in some people.
