  • Madam Narf vs The Rogue Scrunt - Lady in the Water: Media Club Plus S02E05
Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a selection of M Night Shyamalan movies. This episode we watched Lady in the Water and next time we'll be back with The Happening. Also Check out Patreon next week for a watchalong of The Last Airbender with special guest Austin Walker. Lady in the Water, more like Lady OUT OF the Water! Bryce Dallas Howard is back and she's hanging out with Paul Giamatti who, as Cleaveland Heep, is a former doctor who retreats into superintedency after suffering a deep personal loss. Bryce Dallas Howard, Story, is a Narf: a kind of mystical water-dweller whose ancient pact with humanity was broken by our violence and greed. But the Narfs are returning to try to bring enlightenment to humanity. None of that really is in the movie, which mostly features running around an apartment building trying to figure out how to get the Narf home via eagle. It's a weird one! Featuring Keith Carberry (@KeithJCarberry, @KeithJCarberry), Sylvi Bullet (@SYLVIBULLET), Ali Acampora (@Ali-online), Arthur Martinez-Tebbel (@amtebbel) and Janine Hawkins in her Media Club Plus debut. Produced by Keith Carberry Music by Jack de Quidt (available at notquitereal.bandcamp.com) Cover Art by by Annie Johnston-Glick (@dancynrew) anniejg.com To find the screenshots for this episode, check out this post on our patreon, friendsatthetable.cash This episode was made with support from listeners like you! • Crime Is Still Happening - The Village: Media Club Plus S02E04
Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a selection of M Night Shyamalan movies. This episode we watched The Village and next time we'll be back with Lady in the Water. The Village is an isolated, idyllic(?) settlement deep in the forest, surrounded by dangerous, territorial, but ultimately peaceable creatures called, by the Villagers, The Ones We Don't Speak Of. In this movie a generation of elders use fear and love to control a new generation of children, but the promises of the outside world (and the increasing danger and dissatisfaction inside the village itself) is too strong a call. The Village is a movie about where Peace and Innocence come from, how evils are movtivated by love and fear, but without a solid grasp on the answers to those questions. Sometimes boring and slow, sometimes exciting and beaituful, and often shallow and patronizing. Featuring Keith Carberry (@KeithJCarberry, @KeithJCarberry), Sylvi Bullet (@SYLVIBULLET), Ali Acampora (@Ali-online), Arthur Martinez-Tebbel (@amtebbel), ans Jack De Quidt (@notquitereal) Produced by Keith Carberry Music by Jack de Quidt (available at notquitereal.bandcamp.com) Cover Art by by Annie Johnston-Glick (@dancynrew) anniejg.com To find the screenshots for this episode, check out this post on our patreon, friendsatthetable.cash This episode was made with support from listeners like you! • TV Is The Fifth Character - Signs: Media Club Plus S02E03
Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a selection of M Night Shyamalan movies. This episode we watched Signs and next time we'll be back with The Village. Signs is a movie about ex-preacher Graham Hess and his faith in god, which is put to the test when his wife is killed as a pedestrian in a car accident. He loses his faith, leaves the Church, and retreats emotionally inside the self-soothing comfort of atheism, or perhaps fledgling nihilism. Unfortunately for him, in M Night's world, God is real, losing faith is wrong, and raising your kid while atheist is toxic. When the earth is suddenly subject to a widespread alien invasion threat, Graham's lack of faith is shattered by God's Grace, and the true extent of His meticulously planned fate is undeniable. In this movie written in 2000-2001, starting production in September 2001, and released in summer of 2002, we find an almost supernaturally early example of the post 9/11 movie. A movie about media, a Christian God, securing borders against foreign threats, pulled from the percolating subconscious of America. Featuring Keith Carberry (@KeithJCarberry, @KeithJCarberry), Sylvi Bullet (@SYLVIBULLET), Ali Acampora (@Ali-online) and Arthur Martinez-Tebbel (@amtebbel) Produced by Keith Carberry Music by Jack de Quidt (available at notquitereal.bandcamp.com) Cover Art by by Annie Johnston-Glick (@dancynrew) anniejg.com To find the screenshots for this episode, check out this post on our patreon, friendsatthetable.cash This episode was made with support from listeners like you! • Guns at the Table - Unbreakable: Media Club Plus S02E02
Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a bunch of M Night Shyamalan movies. This episode we watched Unbreakable and next time we'll be back with Signs. Unbreakable is a movie I had basically never heard of, so that's fun. In a million years I couldn't have told you that M Night immediately followed up on the success of The Sixth Sense with another Bruce Willis movie. And it's a superhero movie. I think you could fairly call it the first modern superhero movie but I've got nothing to back that up with. I can tell you it really feels like a prototype for all the pre-iron man superhero movies of the 00s. Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, a security guard failing as a husband and a father who has to come to terms with the fact that he has superpowers, under the guidance of Samuel L Jackson's mysterious and wealthy character Elijah Price. • The Twisted Mind of M Night Shyamalan - The Sixth Sense: Media Club Plus S02E01
Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a bunch of M Night Shyamalan movies. This episode we watched the Sixth Sense and next time we'll be back with Unbreakable. The Sixth Sense is so famous for it's twist ending that, as someone who had never seen it before, i think it's regrettably stopped being famous for being really good. It's really good! Malcolm Crowe is a successful and respected child psychologist, until one night an old patient, still suffering, breaks into his home and attacks him, shaking his confidence and ruining his marriage. A year later, he's found another boy, very much like the one he failed, and he's determined to get it right this time. But if you can believe it, not everything is as it seems.
