Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name.17 “They will be my people,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child. 18 Then you will again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.” - Malachi 3:16-18The book of Malachi, the final book of the Old Testament, is incredibly special. Yes, all books of the Bible are special, but after this conversation I will say Malachi now has a special place in my heart. Only four chapters, so quite a bit different than Zechariah, Malachi is a book focused on relationship between God and his people. It’s a book about his love. It’s a book about our sin. It’s a book that should bring up a lot of self-reflective questions as you read it but is anchored in the truth of God’s love for you and his promise of mercy. There’s a lot to unpack in Malachi and to help us do it is Dr. Peter Adam, former principal of Ridley Theological College in Melbourne and author of The Message of Malachi. “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey - riding on a donkey’s colt.” - Zechariah 9:9In my opinion, Zechariah is a diamond of a book. It has so many facets, so many ways to approach it and points of emphasis and things to teach. Last week we talked about Haggai and Zechariah is a partner book - we are still in the post-exilic period talking about rebuilding the temple. But Zechariah covers a lot of ground. It talks about returning to the Lord. There are chapters of visions we haven’t really seen the like of since Daniel and Ezekiel. There are calls to justice and mercy, promises of blessings and a beautiful look ahead to the coming Messiah and the second advent still to come. As I said, this is an incredibly rich, multifaceted book. “Then the Lord sent this message through the prophet Haggai: ‘Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins? This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you! You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes.’” - Haggai 1:3-6The book of Haggai is a bit of a jump back to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah and refocuses in on the temple. At its heart, this is a book about priorities. As the passage I just read says, “Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins?” God is using the prophet Haggai to call out hypocrisy, to call out wayward hearts but lo and behold, what happens? The people listen and we get to see God’s response to their obedience. Haggai is not the longest book by any means, but there’s a lot in it to unpack. What sorrow awaits rebellious, polluted Jerusalem, the city of violence and crime! No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction. It does not trust in the Lord or draw near to its God. Its leaders are like roaring lions hunting for their victims. Its judges are like ravenous wolves at evening time, who by dawn have left no trace of their prey. Its prophets are arrogant liars seeking their own gain. Its priests defile the Temple by disobeying God’s instructions. But the Lord is still there in the city, and he does no wrong. Day by day he hands down justice, and he does not fail. - Zephaniah 3:1-5The book of Zephaniah, while being another in the line of prophets sharing God’s message of judgment and repentance, deserves more time and attention than what we tend to give it. Only three chapters long, God’s message through Zephaniah is a direct yet beautiful encapsulation of the themes we’ve seen so often in the prophets. It’s a book about humility and unity. It’s a book about repentance and turning hearts towards God. It’s a book about God’s judgment against oppressors, poor leaders, and idolatry. It’s a book about the coming of the Lord and the God who not only saves, but will live among his people. “What good is an idol carved by man, or a cast image that deceives you? How foolish to trust in your own creation - a god that can’t even talk! What sorrow awaits you who say to wooden idols, ‘Wake up and save us!’ To speechless stone images you say, ‘Rise up and teach us!’ Can an idol tell you what to do? They may be overlaid with gold and silver, but they are lifeless inside. But the Lord is in his holy Temple. Let all the earth be silent before him.” - Habakkuk 2:18-20The book of Habakkuk is quite unlike any others in the canon of the prophets. Instead of the book being a message that God has given a prophet to share with a nation, Habakkuk is a conversation between Habakkuk and God. The book is structured: “Habakkuk’s first complaint”, “The Lord’s Reply.” “Habakkuk’s second complaint”, “The Lord’s Second Reply”, “Habakkuk’s Prayer.” The themes in this book are not unlike the themes from other prophet books, but the way in which they are explored is very different and what this book teaches us about how we can approach God and the vantage point God has provides a deep and rich look into the character of God.
