The Witches of Letters: A Supernatural Rewatch Podcast

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 5 episode 10 of Supernatural “Abandon All Hope…” Sam and Dean, along with Ellen, Jo and Castiel, go to Carthage, Missouri to find and kill Lucifer. However, upon their arrival Meg shows up with hell hounds in tow who attack the group, leaving Jo mortally wounded. 

We discuss Jo and Ellen’s deaths, and Jo and Dean’s relationship and how they are perfect for each other. Don’t come for us, we have the receipts and you will not change our minds!

We also discuss Crowley who we meet for the first time this episode, how Jo’s death mirrors her father’s death, and how Meg is probably a bigger villain than Lucifer right now.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the lore in this episode of Carthage, Missouri during the Civil War and how true it is; and some Civil War ghost stories from this area.

In this episode we break down season 5 episode 8 “Changing Channels”. Sam and Dean are transported into various TV shows by the trickster, who it turns out is actually the archangel Gabriel, who is trying to force them to say yes to being Lucifer and Michael’s vessels.

We had so much fun with this episode. We discuss how entertaining this episode is; the different TV show references; the trickster/Gabriel plot twist; and how this is actually a deep episode that pushes the main storyline along despite seeming like a silly, goofy episode on the surface.

Sam, Dean and Bobby work a case involving a witch playing poker games where people gamble with years of their life instead of money. Both Bobby and Dean lose years and age, and it’s up to Sam to save them with his secretly good poker skills.

We discuss our thoughts about the character Patrick; the differences in quality between some of the aging scenes; and then we try to understand poker and how fictional aging would work- would Bobby be out of his wheelchair if he just got younger? How old is old Dean supposed to be???

We also discuss how important Bobby is when he says he feels useless, how Sam is a genius when he manipulates Patrick in his poker game, and how toxic masculinity ruined the cute moment between Bobby and Dean at the end.

After some investigation they find a young boy called Jesse who possesses the power to make his thoughts reality, and who Cas says is the Antichrist.

We discuss how the demon lore on the show has seemingly changed; how Jesse is actually very sweet, even though he’s the supposed Antichrist; and also how we never see him again after this episode, even though he seems very relevant to the apocalypse plot.

We also discuss how a lot of the lies we tell children have breaking and entering involved for some reason, and Joy traumatises Laura with a story about sea monkeys.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about what happened to the Castiel action figures on the set, how the Antichrist lore holds up, and some examples of surreal history.
